Election 2020: Mahama given boost by NDC's 10 Regional Chairpersons
Ex-President John Dramani Mahama has been urged to consider the many voices calling on him to contest the National Democratic Congress primaries and run for the 2020 presidential elections.
This was communicated via a communiqué which was signed by all the 10 regional chairmen of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a move to help endear him to the hearts of the people, the statement also contained a request by the regional chairpersons for former President Mahama to tour the country in a bid to show appreciation to supporters of the party for their loyalty during his tenure.
If considered, Ex-President Mahama will be facing stiff opposition from National Democratic Congress heavyweights such as former Trades and Industry Minister, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin and a few others who have expressed interest in contesting the flagbearership of the NDC.
Below is a copy of the communiqué.
Meanwhile, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress shortly after the communiqué by the 10 regional chairpersons of the party, has issued a statement cautioning members of the NDC that it has “not yet officially launched” its “internal electoral processes that allow members to engage in campaign and other political activities.”
The statement also advised members of the party against “insults, and vilification of potential contestants” who wish to run for offices during the 2018 NDC primaries.
The statement which was signed by the National Chairman of the NDC, Kofi Portuphy also noted that such acts which are usually rife on social media brings the party into disrepute and “destroys the cohesive unity” of the National Democratic Congress.
It added that, “such conduct seriously undermines the painstaking efforts by Council of Elders and the NEC to reorganize the party.”
